SFO + CHI + NYC

I’ve always been drawn to the skyscrapers and concrete jungles of the modern metropolis. During my life, I’ve been lucky to spend a good deal of time in many cities across the nation and around the world, but I keep coming back to New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

I decided to use photos I’d taken of the different cities at various times and structure them in a way where they could be seen as a connected series. Rather than an overly standard cityscape silhouette, I went with another view of each city that was still defining without being obvious. I adjusted the framing and proportion to give a sense that all were taken from similar perspective. And then I removed the color and increased the contrast so the elements of the buildings were in sharp relief.

Thanks to the fine folks at WhiteWall, I was able to print the photos on matte canvas prints and mount them against my living room wall. San Francisco and New York span the coasts while Chicago, the city by the lake, makes up the center — a constant reminder of the magnificence of the American city.
